Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride.
Each film coated tablet contains: Ciprofloxacin (as Hydrochloride) USP 500 mg.
Antibacterial.
Pharmacology: Ciprofloxacin HCl (Seaproflox) is one of the most effective fluorinated quinolones. Ciprofloxacin is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is particularly active against Gram-negative bacteria, including Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, Neisseria and Pseudomonas. Ciprofloxacin has moderate activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus faecalis. It is active against Chlamydia and some Mycobacteria. Most anaerobic organisms are not susceptible. A principal mode of action is the inhibition of DNA gyrase which mediates the formation of supercoils of DNA.
Ciprofloxacin HCl (Seaproflox) is indicated for the treatment of the following infections: Urinary tract infections; Respiratory tract infections; Osteomyelitis; Skin and soft tissue infections; Bacterial gastrointestinal infections; Gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted diseases; Prophylaxis in granulocytopenic patients; Enteric fever; Bone and joint infections; Surgical prophylaxis.
The usual adult oral dose of Ciprofloxacin ranges from 250 to 500 mg twice daily depending on the severity and nature of the infection.
Acute exacerbations of cystic fibrosis associated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection: Adolescents and children aged 5 years or more: 20 mg per kg body weight by mouth, up to a maximum of 750 mg twice daily.
Acute uncomplicated cystitis in women: 100 mg twice daily.
Gonorrhea: Single oral doses of 250-500 mg.
Meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis: Single oral dose of 500 mg.
Surgical Infection prophylaxis: Single oral doses of 750 mg given 60 to 90 minutes before the procedure.
Or as directed by the physician.
Ciprofloxacin should not be given to patients with known hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics.
Ciprofloxacin HCl (Seaproflox) should be used with caution to patients with epilepsy, in hepatic or renal impairment, in pregnancy, during breast-feeding. It is not recommended to children or adolescents. If it seems that the use of Ciprofloxacin is more important than its risk, then it might be given as 15 mg/kg/day in two divided doses. There is no risk of crystalluria due to use of Ciprofloxacin. To avoid excessive alkalinity of urine, ensure adequate fluid intake.
Ciprofloxacin HCl (Seaproflox) should be used with caution in pregnancy, during breast-feeding.
Ciprofloxacin HCl (Seaproflox) may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, sleep disorders, rash, pruritus, anaphylaxis, photosensitivity, increase in blood urea and creatinine, transient disturbances in liver enzymes and bilirubin, arthralgia and myalgia, blood disorders.
Antacids and other cations: Early investigational trials with quinolones revealed decreased ciprofloxacin absorption when co-administered with magnesium-aluminum antacids.
Theophylline: Theophylline serum concentrations have been found to be markedly elevated when co-administered with ciprofloxacin.
Other: Rifampicin may induce the metabolism of ciprofloxacin leading to lower serum concentrations and failure of therapy. The combination of ciprofloxacin and chloramphenicol may be antagonistic.
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C. Protect from light.
J01MA02 - ciprofloxacin ; Belongs to the class of fluoroquinolones. Used in the systemic treatment of infections.
