Side Effects
Conditions the patient need to look out for: Severe allergic reactions.
These are very rare in people applying Mupirocin (Bactroban). Signs include: raised and itchy rash; swelling, sometimes of the face or mouth, causing difficulty in breathing; collapse or loss of consciousness.
Contact a doctor immediately if the patient gets any of these symptoms. Stop using Mupirocin (Bactroban).
Mupirocin (Bactroban) can cause skin irritation.
If the patient gets skin irritation, stop using Mupirocin (Bactroban). Wipe off any ointment and tell the doctor as soon as possible.
On rare occasions, medicines like Mupirocin (Bactroban) can cause inflammation of the colon (large intestine), causing diarrhoea, usually with blood and mucus, stomach pain, fever (pseudomembranous colitis).
Tell the doctor as soon as possible if the patient gets any of these symptoms.
Common side effects: These may affect up to 1 in 10 people: burning at the place where the ointment is applied.
Uncommon side effects: These may affect up to 1 in 100 people: itching, redness, stinging and/or dryness on the skin in the place where the ointment is applied.
Very rare side effects: These may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people: Allergic reactions.
If the patient gets side effects: Tell the doctor or pharmacist if any of the side effects listed becomes severe or troublesome, or if the patient notices any side effects not listed in this monograph.
