Live attenuated rotavirus vaccine
Indications/Uses
Active immunization of healthy infants from 6 wk for the prevention of gastroenteritis due to rotavirus infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administer orally as 3-dose regimen, 4 wk apart, beginning at 6 wk. The 3-dose regimen should be completed by 1 yr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe combined immunodeficiency disease. History of intussusception. Infants w/ history of uncorrected congenital malformation of the GI tract predisposing to intussusception.
Special Precautions
Not to be administered parenterally. Delay administration in acute infection or febrile illness. Carefully evaluate cases w/ symptoms suggestive of intussusception. May not protect all recipients against rotavirus infection. Not for protection against gastroenteritis caused by other pathogens. Interchangeability w/ other rotavirus vaccines. Not indicated for adults including women of childbearing age. Not to be administered during pregnancy. Infants who are immunocompromised, w/ HIV or chronic gastroenteritis; in close contact w/ immunodeficient persons. Not recommended in childn >24 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Fever, irritability, decreased appetite & activity level, vomiting, diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
Immune response may be reduced w/ immunosuppressive therapies including irradiation, antimetabolites, alkylating agents, cytotoxic drugs & corticosteroids (used in minimal dose).
