Indications/Uses
Maturity-onset DM (NIDDM) in patients who require an oral hypoglycemic medication.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 30 mg, may be increased to 60, 90 or 120 mg daily as a single dose.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take before breakfast to avoid or minimize possible onset of digestive disorders. Do not break/chew.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sulfonylurea medication class. Juvenile-onset (type-1) diabetes. Diabetes w/ ketosis. Diabetic individuals having surgery, recovering from a serious accident, or fighting an infection. Hepatic insufficiency. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Caution in hepatic impairment. Do not use if there is clear evidence of liver illness.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia can occur in presence of other illnesses eg, hepatic & renal dysfunction, starvation, & alcohol consumption. Headaches, GI problems, nausea, dizziness, & skin reactions eg, rash, pruritus, & erythema.
Drug Interactions
Hypoglycemic effects may be increased by aspirin, NSAIDs, phenylbutazone, clofibrate, sulfonamide, cimetidine, imidazole antifungal agents, & MAOIs. Hypoglycemic effect may sometimes be reduced by rifampin, barbiturates, phenytoin, thiazide diuretics, diazoxide, glucocorticoids, estrogens, sympathomimetic drugs, & occasionally alcohol.
