Amlodipine (as besilate).
Description
Each tablet contains 5 or 10 mg of amlodipine (as besilate).
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: Other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, calcium hydrogen phosphate, sodium starch glycollate and magnesium stearate.
Action
Amlodipine belongs to a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. It relieves heart problems by widening blood vessels to allow more blood to flow through. This helps to reduce blood pressure and relieve the strain on the heart muscle.
Indications/Uses
This medicine is used in the treatment of high blood pressure and angina, including the rare form Prinzmetal's angina. Amlodipine does not provide immediate relief of chest pain from angina.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Amlodipine-Teva Tablets are for oral use and should be swallowed with a drink of water.
The usual dosage instructions are given as follows: Adults (including the elderly): The starting dose is one 5 mg tablet, once a day. This may be increased to a maximum of 10 mg (two 5 mg tablets or one 10 mg tablet) once a day.
Children: Not recommended.
If patient forgets to take Amlodipine-Teva: If patient forgets to take a tablet, take one as soon as remembered, unless it is nearly time to take the next one. Never take two doses together. Take the remaining doses at the correct time.
Overdosage
If patient takes more Amlodipine-Teva than he/she should: If patient (or someone else) swallows a lot of the tablets all together, or if a child has swallowed any of the tablets, go to a nearest hospital casualty department or a doctor immediately. Take the leaflet, any remaining tablets and the container to the hospital or doctor so that they know which tablets were consumed. Overdose may cause redness of the skin and low blood pressure (dizziness and fainting).
Contraindications
Do not take Amlodipine-Teva if patient: Is sensitive to amlodipine besilate or any of the other ingredients in the medicine; Is sensitive to any other calcium channel blockers, e.g. nifedipine, felodipine; Is pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breast-feeding; Suffers from unstable angina (excluding Prinzmetal's angina) or aortic stenosis (a narrowing of the main artery leading from the heart); Has suffered a collapse of blood circulation system (cardiogenic shock).
Special Precautions
Take special care with Amlodipine-Teva if patient has: Liver problems; had a heart attack within the last month; suffers from heart failure; a hypertensive crisis (very high blood pressure).
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Do no take Amlodipine-Teva if patient is pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breast-feeding.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Amlodipine-Teva can have side effects.
If the following happens, stop taking Amlodipine-Teva and tell the doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at the nearest hospital: Difficulty breathing and swelling of the lips, face and neck.
This is a very serious but very rare side effect. The patient may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation.
Tell the doctor if patient notices any of the symptoms listed as follows: Common side effects (affecting fewer than one person in 10 but more than one person in 100): Headache; Water retention causing swelling; Sleepiness, tiredness; Abdominal pain, nausea; Flushing; Dizziness; Palpitations.
Uncommon side effects (affecting fewer than one person in 100 but more than one person in 1,000): Shortness of breath, fainting; Indigestion, vomiting, dry mouth, altered bowel habit; Difficulty sleeping, mood changes; Impotence, breast enlargement in men; Problems with urination including an increased need to urinate; Changes to taste perception; Low blood pressure; Blocked or runny nose, sneezing; Back, muscle or joint pain; Rash, skin discoloration, increased sweating, itching; Visual disturbances; Ringing in the ears; Loss of sensation, muscle cramps; Shaking, generally feeling unwell, feeling of weakness; Hair loss; Weight increase or decrease; Chest pain.
Very rare side effects (affecting fewer than one person in 10,000): Unusual bleeding or unexplained bruising; High level of blood sugar; Inflammation of the blood vessels; Coughing; Enlarged gums; Numbness or tingling in the hand and feet; Abnormal liver function test results; Hepatitis, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes); Severe, red, itchy skin rash; Heart attack, irregular heartbeat; Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas); Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) causing abdominal pain.
If patient notices any side effects not mentioned in this monograph, inform the doctor or pharmacist.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Store in the original packaging. Keep the blister in the outer carton. Do not take these tablets if there are any signs of discolouration or deterioration of the tablets. Return all unused medicines to a pharmacist for safe disposal.
Patient Counseling Information
If you have been told by your doctor to take ½ (half) tablet daily, we suggest not to use any device for halving, refer to the instruction as follows on how to break the tablet.
Place the tablet into a flat, hard surface (e.g. a table or worktop), with the inscription upwards.
Break the tablet by pushing it with the index fingers of both hands place along the break line.
