Indications/Uses
Elimination of intestinal contents during pre-treatment for colonoscopy & large bowel operation.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Dissolve 1 pack in water to make about 2 L soln. Usually, orally administer 2-4 L of dissolved soln at a rate of about 1 L/hr. Refrain from dosing >4 L. Discontinue dosing at the time excretion liqd becomes clear. Pre-treatment for colonoscopy On the day of exam, start dosing from about 4 hr ahead of scheduled start time & refrain from having breakfast (intake of water is only acceptable). On the day before exam, start dosing after the elapse of at least 1 hr following supper & refrain from having any food after supper on previous day (intake of water is only acceptable). Breakfast & lunch previously should be in smaller amounts & supper must be in liqd form. Pre-treatment of large bowel operation On the day before operation, fast after lunch (intake of water is only acceptable), start dosing after the elapse of at least 3 hr following lunch.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. GI tract obstruction; intestinal perforation; toxic megacolon.
Special Precautions
Slowly or temporarily discontinue treatment until symptoms abate if severe discomfort or distension occurs. Discontinue if digestive symptoms (eg, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain); shock, anaphylactoid symptoms appear. Not suited for pre-treatment for barium enema x-ray colonography. Avoid short period administration (give at 1 L/hr as guide). Mallory-Weiss syndrome; intestinal perforation & ischaemic colitis. Patients w/ angina pectoris or old MI; prior intestinal diverticulum or on any drug which can cause clinically serious problems once inhibited. Observe patients w/ impaired gag reflex, unconscious or semi-conscious patients, & those prone to regurgitation or aspiration during administration. Carefully administer soln in case of intestinal stricture or retention of intestinal contests (eg, in case of constipation) & closely monitor until defecation is seen. Avoid taking insulin or oral hypoglycemic agent on the day preceding exam; adding any other ingredient or flavor to dissolved soln. Not to be taken oral medications w/in 1 hr of administration. Patients w/ impaired renal function. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Shock, anaphylactoid symptoms (facial pallor, decreased BP, vomiting, continuous nausea, bed & cold feeling, vertigo, urticaria, dyspnea, face oedema); intestinal perforation; hyponatremia leading to disturbed consciousness & convulsion.
Drug Interactions
May affect therapeutic effects of drugs w/ narrow therapeutic index or short t½.
