Kanamycin
Indications/Uses
Initial therapy for serious infections caused by bacteria susceptible to kanamycin. Bacterial GIT infections. UTI caused by Proteus vulgaris, E. coli, Staph spp., & Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhea). Resp tract & intrathoracic infections caused by Staph spp., Strep pneumoniae, & H. influenzae. Relief of skin inflammation or localized bacterial infections including inflammatory conditions of ear, nose & eyes.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM Reconstitution: 1 g in 3 mL sterile water for inj. Adult 0.5-1.5 g daily in 2 divided doses every 12 hr. Newborn to 1 yr 7.5 mg/kg bid. Childn >1 yr to 12 yr 3-7.5 mg/kg bid.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to kanamycin & other aminoglycosides.
Special Precautions
Discontinue treatment if skin rash or cold-like reactions; fever, swollen nodes, peeling of skin & mucocutaneous manifestations in mouth, throat, nose, genitourinary & eyes occur. Deafness may occur. Renal impairment. Not to be used during pregnancy. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, skin rash, drug fever.
