Each mL contains Gentamicin sulphate equivalent to Gentamicin base 40 mg.
Gentamicin sulphate injection is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic which is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
The principal use is for the treatment of: Urinary tract infections; Gastrointestinal tract infections; Respiratory tract infections; Meningitis and Myelitis; Infectious lesion and skin burn and blister with infection.
Gentamicin sulphate injection is clear liquid solution and heat resistant. It does not require keeping in refrigerator. It should not be mixed with other injectable medicines and if necessary, it should be separated.
Generally, it is administered intramuscular injection and if there is necessity, it can be intravenous injection. The dose per day is 3-5 mg per kg, injected every other day or as directed by the physician or it will be used in the following dosage: Intramuscular injection divided into two injections, with the same dose.
Adult: Body weight between 40-80 kg, injecting 2-4 mL per day.
Children: Body weight between 15-40 kg, injecting 1-2 mL per day.
For patients with Gonorrhea, it shall be intramuscular injection with single dose of 240-280 mg; it requires three or more vials of medicine. For pain relief there shall be one half intramuscular injection of dose on each side of the hip.
Intravenous injection: There will be intravenous injection if intramuscular is not possible, for example, the patient is shock and unconscious, has hemorrhagic disorder, severe skin burns and blister, or the patient has reduced muscle mass. The dose is the same as an intramuscular injection. The medicine is dissolved in Normal saline or Dextrose 5% in water in the rate of 100-200 mL. The concentration of Gentamicin sulphate injection in mixed solution for injection should not be over 1 mg per 1 mL (0.1%), by intravenous infusion, over 1-2 hours.
1. It is prohibited to use in people who have allergy against this medicine.
2. This medicine may damage the auditory system and cause deafness and hearing loss.
3. This medicine has a nephrotoxic effect and should be used with caution and reducing doses in patients with impaired renal function and children.
4. Pregnant women should avoid using this medicine.
5. If using this medicine and have a rash or a cold like symptom, patient should stop using the medicine and consult a doctor immediately.
6. When using this medicine, if the patient has the following symptoms: fever and red rash, blister and peeling of the skin and mucous membranes, such as in the mouth, throat and nose, genital organ and conjunctivitis, he/she should discontinue the medicine and consult a doctor as he/she may have Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS).
This medicine should not be used by newborns and pregnant women except in those who are absolutely necessary. It should not be used with persons who have recently used antibiotic medicine with ototoxicity, for example, Kanamycin and Streptomycin, as it may have accumulation of medicine, causing ototoxicity.
For strong diuretics, there shall not be using of diuretics in combination with Gentamicin sulphate injection, because diuretics are also ototoxic. People with history of hypersensitivity to these medicines, should use this medicine with caution.
This medicine should not be used by pregnant women except in those who are absolutely necessary.
