Indications/Uses
Infections due to fosfomycin-susceptible strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus sp, Serratia marcescens, & multidrug resistant strains of Staph aureus & E. coli in septicemia, infection of resp, urogenital & abdominal tracts, bones, lymph node, head injuries & meningitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Administer as IV drip infusion over 1-2 hr period. Adult 2-4 g in 2 divided doses daily. Childn 100-200 mg/kg in 2 divided doses daily. Renal dysfunction w/ CrCl 80-100 mL/min 2 g/12 hr, 40-50 mL/min 1 g/12 hr, 20-30 mL/min 500 mg/12 hr.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue treatment when symptoms of shock eg, chest anxiety, dyspnea, decreased BP, cyanosis, urticaria & discomfort occur; jaundice appears. Phlebitis & angialgia following IV administration. Patients whose parents or siblings are predisposed to develop allergic reactions eg, bronchial asthma, rash & urticaria. Periodically perform liver & kidney function tests as well as hematological tests in patients on long term therapy. Patients on restricted Na diet. Liver disorders. Avoid use during pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Shock; jaundice.
Drug Interactions
Lowered serum conc & urinary excretion w/ metoclopramide; other drugs that increase GI motility.
