Purified chick embryo cell culture rabies vaccine (Pitman Moore Wistar strain) potency ≥2.5 IU
Indications/Uses
Pre- or post-exposure prophylaxis against rabies.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Pre-exposure vaccination 1 mL IM on days 0, 7 & 28 (or 21), given into the deltoid muscle, or in small childn, in the anterolateral thigh but never in the gluteal region. Post-exposure in incomplete or unvaccinated person Active vaccination 5 IM inj of 1 mL on days 0, 3, 7, 14 & 28 into the deltoid muscle & in the anterolateral thigh in small childn, but never in the gluteal region, or 0.1 mL intradermally. Passive immunization w/ human rabies Ig Initially, 20 IU/kg of human rabies Ig via IM. Post-exposure immunization in previously vaccinated person 2 IM doses on days 0 & 3 & do not require any rabies Ig.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Do not administer by intravascular inj. If rabies vaccines derived from non-avian sources are not available, all necessary prep should be made to treat complications which might arise in the event of anaphylactic reaction. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Transient fever, erythema multiforme.
Drug Interactions
Check the Ab titer when vaccination is undertaken during treatment w/ immunosuppressants. May attenuate the effects of the vaccine when in concomitant w/ rabies Ig. Reduced Ab formation after intradermal administration w/ chloroquine.
