Nystatin.
Description
Nystatin suspension is a golden yellow suspension with banana flavor.
Each mL contains: Nystatin 100,000 IU.
Action
Antifungal.
Pharmacology: Pharmacodynamics/Pharmacokinetics: Nystatin is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is not absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes when applied topically.
Indications/Uses
Nystatin or polyene antifungal antibiotic used for the prophylaxis and treatment of candidiasis in the oral cavity. It has been used with antibacterials in various regimens to suppress the overgrowth of gastrointestinal flora and as part of selective decontamination regimens.
Dosage/Direction for Use
For the treatment of lesions of the mouth, pastilles or a suspension may be given in dosage of 100,000 units (1 mL) 4 times daily.
A prophylactic dose for infants born to mothers with vaginal candidiasis is 100,000 units daily (1 mL) of the oral suspension.
Or as prescribed by the physician.
Overdosage
Taking more Nystatin oral suspension than recommended should not cause any severe effects as the amount of Nystatin absorbed by the body is very small. With very high doses, nausea, gastrointestinal upset were reported. However, in the case of a child, the patient may check with the doctor or hospital emergency department.
Warnings
Talk to a doctor or pharmacist as Nystatin should not be used if they have a fungal infection in the lungs or on the skin (systemic mycoses).
Special Precautions
Use in Pregnancy: No adverse or complications have been attributed to Nystatin in infants born to women treated with Nystatin.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
If the patient is pregnant or breast-feeding, think they may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask the doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
It is not known whether Nystatin can cause harm to the unborn baby when taken by a pregnant woman or if nystatin can affect the patient's ability to conceive, however absorption of Nystatin from digestive system is small.
It is not known whether Nystatin is excreted in breastmilk. Caution should be used when Nystatin is given to women who are breast-feeding.
Adverse Reactions
Large oral doses can occasionally cause: Sickness and diarrhea; bloating; stomach cramps, indigestion.
Drug Interactions
Oral irritation or sensitisation may occur. Rashes, including urticaria have occurred and Stevens-Johnson syndrome has been reported rarely. Irritation may occur rarely after the topical use of Nystatin.
Storage
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
