Indications/Uses
Induction & maintenance of general anesth in adult & ped patient for inpatient & outpatient surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Induction: Individualized dosage. Adult & childn Inspired conc of up to 8% in <2 min w/ O2 or O2-nitrous oxide mixt. Maintenance: 0.5-3% w/ or w/o concomitant use of nitrous oxide.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to other halogenated anesth. Known or suspected genetic susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia.
Special Precautions
May cause resp depression. Pre-op hyperkalemia especially in patients w/ latent & overt neuromuscular disease, particularly Duchenne muscular dystrophy. QT prolongation, ventricular arrhythmia (ped w/ Pompe's disease). Patients w/ mitochondrial disorders. Malignant hyperthermia. Seizures. Maintain hemodynamic stability in CAD patients. Risk for ICP elevations. Not recommended in concomitant use w/ KOH containing CO2 absorbents. May increase potential for hepatic injury. Severe hepatic dysfunction. Renal insufficiency. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Agitation; bradycardia; hypotension; cough; nausea. Somnolence, dizziness, headache; tachycardia; HTN; resp disorder, laryngospasm; salivary hypersecretion; chills, pyrexia; abnormal blood glucose, LFT, WBC, increased fluoride; hypothermia.
Drug Interactions
Potential risk of ventricular arrhythmia w/ α- & β-sympathomimetic agents (eg, isoprenaline, adrenaline & noradrenaline). Risk of crisis during an operation w/ non-selective MAOIs. May lead to marked hypotension or risk of additive -ve inotropic effect w/ Ca antagonist. Rare increases in serum K levels w/ succinylcholine. Decreased MAC w/ benzodiazepines, nitrous oxide & opiates. Increased metabolism w/ CYP2E1 inducers (eg, INH & alcohol). Increased intensity & duration of neuromuscular blockade w/ nondepolarizing muscle relaxants eg, pancuronium, vecuronium or atracurium.
