Contents
Per sachet Na picosulfate 10 mg, light Mg oxide 3.5 g, anhydrous citric acid 12 g
Indications/Uses
To clean the bowel prior to x-ray exam or endoscopy & prior to surgery when judged clinically necessary.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Reconstitute contents of 1 sachet in a cup of water (approx 150 mL). Stir for 2-3 min. Adult including elderly Split-dose regimen (evening before & day of procedure) 1st sachet is taken night before procedure & 2nd is taken next day, in the morning prior to procedure. On the day before procedure: 1st reconstituted sachet is taken in the evening (eg, 5:00-9:00 pm) followed by at least five 250-mL drinks of clear liqd. On the day of procedure: 2nd reconstituted sachet is taken in the morning (5-9 hr before procedure) followed by at least three 250-mL drinks of clear liqd. Clear liqd may be consumed until 1 hr before procedure. Day-before regimen (evening before procedure only) 1st sachet is taken in the afternoon or early evening & 2nd is taken approx 6 hr later, the night before procedure. On the day before procedure: 1st reconstituted sachet is taken in the afternoon or early evening (eg, 4:00-6:00 pm) followed by at least five 250-mL drinks of clear liqd; 2nd reconstituted sachet is taken in the late evening (eg, 10:00 pm-12:00 am) followed by at least three 250-mL drinks of clear liqd. Clear liqd may be consumed until 1 hr before procedure. Childn ≥9 yr Adult dose, 4-9 yr 1 sachet morning, ½ sachet afternoon, 2-4 yr ½ sachet morning & afternoon, 1-2 yr ¼ sachet morning & afternoon. 1st dose is to be taken before 8:00 am on the day before the procedure followed by 2nd dose 6-8 hr later.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Congestive cardiac failure, gastric retention, GI ulceration, toxic colitis & megacolon, ileus, nausea & vomiting, acute surgical abdominal conditions (eg, acute appendicitis), known or suspected GI obstruction or perforation, severe dehydration, rhabdomyolysis, hypermagnesemia, active inflammatory bowel disease, severe renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Not to be used as routine laxative. May modify absorption of regularly prescribed oral medication. Perform prompt corrective action to restore fluid/electrolyte balance in patients w/ signs or symptoms of hypokalemia or hyponatraemia. Drinking only water to replace fluid losses may lead to electrolyte imbalance; do not drink only water. Bowel cleansing period should not exceed 24 hr. Caution in patients w/ renal impairment, heart disease or inflammatory bowel disease; patients on drugs that might affect water &/or electrolyte balance eg, diuretics, corticosteroids, lithium; childn, elderly, debilitated individuals & patients at risk of hypokalaemia. Not to be taken by patients w/ rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Contains 5 mmol K per sachet. Preferable to avoid use during pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Modified absorption of orally administered medicines (eg, antiepileptics, contraceptives, antidiabetics, antibiotics). Take tetracycline & fluoroquinolone antibiotics, Fe, digoxin, chlorpromazine & penicillamine at least 2 hr before & not <6 hr after administration of Picoprep to avoid chelation w/ Mg. Lowered efficacy w/ bulk-forming laxatives. Increased risk of water retention &/or electrolyte imbalance w/ NSAIDs or drugs known to induce SIADH eg, TCAs, SSRIs, antipsychotic drugs & carbamazepine. Concomitant use w/ drugs which may be associated w/ hypokalaemia (eg, diuretics or corticosteroids, or where hypokalaemia is a particular risk ie, cardiac glycosides).
