Ceftriaxone
Indications/Uses
Resp & urinary tract, ENT, soft tissue, bone & joint, O & G infections, gonorrhea & other infections including septicemia, meningitis & peritonitis. Prophylaxis against infections in abdominal, pelvic orthopedic, cardiac, pulmonary, esophageal & vascular surgery where there is increased risk from infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV/IM Adult & childn >12 yr 1-2 g once daily, may be raised to 4 g once daily in severe cases or in infections caused by moderately sensitive organisms. Neonate, infant & childn ≤12 yr 20-50 mg/kg once daily. Max: 50 mg/kg daily. Patient w/ CrCl <10 mL/min Max: 2 g daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone or to any other cephalosporin. Previous hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin & other β-lactam agents. Hyperbilirubinemic newborns. Neonates requiring treatment w/ Ca-containing IV soln. Premature neonates up to postmenstrual age of 41 wk.
Special Precautions
Immediately discontinue & initiate adequate emergency measures in case of severe hypersensitivity reactions. Should not be mixed or administered simultaneously w/ Ca-containing soln, even via different infusion lines. Reports of severe cases of hemolytic anemia; Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea; Ca ceftriaxone precipitates in the gall bladder in patients receiving doses ≥1 g/day; pancreatitis (rarely). Superinfections w/ non-susceptible microorganisms may occur. Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Eosinophilia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia; diarrhea, loose stools; increased hepatic enzymes; rash.
