Phytomenadione
Indications/Uses
Hemorrhage or threatened hemorrhage associated w/ a low blood level of prothrombin or factor VII. Antidote to anticoagulant drugs of coumarin type. Neonatal hemorrhage & prevention of vit K deficiency states in newborn infants.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Potentially fatal & severe hemorrhage 10-20 mg by slow IV inj. Repeat dose if response is inadequate. Max: 40 mg daily given intravenously in 24 hr. Less severe hemorrhage 10-20 mg by IM inj, repeat dose if response is inadequate. Other indications 10-20 mg as required. Childn 5-10 mg. Newborn infant Prophylaxis: 1 mg IM inj; therapeutic: 1 mg IM inj at 8 hrly intervals if necessary.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Benzyl alcohol in newborn infants especially in immature neonates.
Special Precautions
Severe anaphylactoid reactions associated w/ histamine release. Administer slowly & not <40 mg should be given during 24-hr period. Avoid large doses. Not an antidote to heparin. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
IV inj: Flushing of the face, sweating, chest constriction, cyanosis & peripheral vascular collapse. IM inj: Local cutaneous & SC changes.
