Dosage/Direction for Use

Initially 2-3 mL/min via IV infusion. Maintenance: 0.5-1 mL/min.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Concomitant use w/ halothane anesth.

Special Precautions

Coronary, mesenteric or peripheral vascular thrombosis; patients w/ hypotension following MI; Prinzmetal's variant angina, diabetes, HTN or hyperthyroidism; profound hypoxia or hypercabia. May cause serious allergic-type reactions due to Na metabisulfite. Frequently check BP & rate of flow to avoid HTN. Avoid abrupt w/drawal & extravasation. Prolonged use. Avoid contact w/ Fe salts, alkalis or oxidizing agents. Concomitant use w/ MAOIs or TCAs. May affect ability to drive & use machines. Pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in childn.

Adverse Reactions

Anxiety; headache; cardiogenic shock, arrhythmia, bradycardia, stress cardiomyopathy; peripheral ischemia, gangrene, HTN, plasma depletion; dyspnea; inj site extravasation & necrosis.

Drug Interactions

Severe, prolonged HTN & possible arrhythmias w/ volatile halogenated anesth agents, MAOIs, TCAs, linezolid, adrenergic-serotoninergic drugs or other cardiac sensitizing agents. Enhanced effects by guanethidine. Incompatibility w/ Fe salts, alkalis, oxidising agents, barbiturates, chlorpheniramine, chlorothiazide, nitrofurantoin, phenytoin, Na bicarbonate, Na iodide, streptomycin, sulfadiazine, sulfafurazole, insulin.
