Magnesium hydroxide.
Description
An off-white opaque viscous liquid with raspberry flavour. Each 5ml contains 800mg of Magnesium Hydroxide.
Action
Pharmacology: Pharmacodynamics: The cathartic action of magnesium hydroxide is believed to result from osmotically mediated water retention, which then stimulates peristalsis. Other mechanisms may contribute to their effects, including the production of inflammatory mediators. Magnesium hydroxide may stimulate the release of cholecystokinin, which leads to intraluminal fluid and electrolyte accumulation and to increased intestinal motility. It is estimated that for every additional mEq of Mg2+ in the intestinal lumen, fecal weight increases by about 7g.
The usual dose of magnesium salts contains 40 to 120 mEq of Mg2+ and produces 300 to 600ml of stool within 6 hours.
Pharmacokinetics: Magnesium hydroxide, taken orally, reacts relatively rapidly with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form magnesium chloride and water. About 30% of the magnesium ions are absorbed from the small intestine as magnesium salts.
Indications/Uses
For relief of occasional constipation.
Dosage/Direction for Use

Do not exceed the stated dose.
Shake well before use.
Dose may be taken once a day preferably at bedtime, in divided dose or as directed by doctor.
Drink a full glass (8 oz.) of liquid with each dose.
Do not use this product for more than 3 consecutive days unless by physician's order.
Overdosage
Overdosage Symptom: Symptom of overdose include gastrointestinal irritation and watery diarrhea. Magnesium poisoning may produce hypermagnesaemia; symptoms of which include nausea, vomiting, flushing, thirst, hypotension, drowsiness, confusion, loss of tendon reflexes, muscle weakness, respiratory depression, cardiac arrhythmias, coma and cardiac arrest.
Treatment: Treatment consist of intravenous administration of calcium gluconate injection 10% in a dose of 10-20ml to counteract respiratory depression or heart block. If renal function is normal, adequate fluids should be given to assist removal of magnesium from the body. Dialysis may be necessary in patients with renal impairment or severe hypermagnesaemia.
Contraindications
Laxatives containing magnesium are contraindicated in patients with impaired renal function. Laxatives should not be taken if abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, change in bowel habits, or rectal bleeding are present.
Avoid use in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to components of the product.
Special Precautions
Ask a doctor before using any laxative if the patient have kidney disease, a magnesium restricted diet, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, a sudden change in bowel habit lasting more than two weeks, or already used a laxative for more than one week.
Stop using this product and consult a doctor if the patient have rectal bleeding or no bowel movement after 6 hours of taking this product. These symptoms may be signs of a serious condition.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
For magnesium hydroxide, no clinical data on exposed pregnancies are available. Animal studies do not indicate direct or indirect harmful effects with respect to pregnancy, embryonal/foetal development parturition or postnatal development. Magnesium crosses the placenta and is excreted in small amounts in breast milk. Use during pregnancy and lactation should be avoided unless on the advice of a doctor.
Adverse Reactions
Magnesium hydroxide may cause diarrhoea, an effect that is dose-dependent and hypermagnesaemia may occur, usually in patients with renal impairment. Very rarely, signs of potential serious effects may occur such as electrolyte imbalance (confusion, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, and unusual tiredness or weakness) due to acute overdosage or chronic misuse. Other signs of side effects may include bloating, nausea, gas formation and increased thirst.
Drug Interactions
Magnesium hydroxide may interact with many other drugs both by alterations in gastric pH and emptying, and by formation of complexes that are not absorbed.
Interactions can be minimised by giving magnesium hydroxide and any other medication 2-3 hours apart.
Storage
Keep container well closed and in a dry place. Store below 30°C. Do not freeze.
Recommended Shelf-Life: 3 years.
