Indications/Uses

Clearing of bowels in prep for endoscopic & radiologic exam & colonic surgery.

Dosage/Direction for Use

1 sachet dissolved in 1 L of water for 15-20 kg corresponding to ave dosage of 3-4 L.

Overdosage

View Fortrans overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Administration

May be taken with or without food.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Dehydration, severe heart failure, advanced carcinoma or any other colonic pathology causing excessive mucosal fragility; acute phases of intestinal tract inflammation eg, Crohn's disease & ulcerative colitis; GI perforation or risk of perforation; toxic colitis or megacolon; patients w/ ileus, GI obstruction or stenosis; gastric emptying disorders eg, gastroparesis, gastric stasis. Childn & adolescents <18 yr.

Special Precautions

Allergic-type reactions. Patients w/ fluid & electrolyte disturbances eg, hyponatremia, hypokalemia; at risk of potential complications eg, altered renal function, cardiac insufficiency or treated concomitantly w/ diuretics. Risk of aspiration pneumonia in patients w/ regurgitation tendencies, bedridden or altered neurological function &/or motor disorder; acute pulmonary oedema in patients w/ cardiac or renal insufficiency; ischaemic colitis or concomitant use of stimulant laxatives eg, bisacodyl or Na picosulfate. Patients w/ strict low-salt diet. Correct electrolyte abnormalities prior to administration. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr. Elderly patients in frail general condition.

Drug Interactions

Other oral treatments may not be absorbed due to diarrhoea provoked by Fortrans (take >2 hr before). Partially affected efficacy for medicines w/ small therapeutic range or short t_½ eg, digoxin, antiepileptics, coumarins & immunosuppressants.
