BETADINE Gargle and Mouthwash is an iodine coloured solution with a characteristic odour.
Active Ingredient: Povidone-Iodine 1% w/v.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: Saccharin Sodium, Ethyl Alcohol 96% v/v, Menthol, Methyl salicylate, Glycerin, Purified water.
BETADINE Gargle and Mouthwash contains a medicine called Povidone-Iodine that kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, spores and protozoa.
BETADINE Gargle & Mouthwash is used for: Minor irritation of the mouth and throat; Relief and prevention of painful infection as in pharyngitis, oral moniliasis, tonsilitis, aphthous ulcers, stomatitis, gingivitis, inflammatory conditions of the mouth & pharynx.
How much to use: Use full strength as a gargle or a mouthwash. May be diluted with an equal volume of warm water.
Gargle or rinse for at least half a minute. Repeat every 2 to 4 hours or as directed.
If the patient does not understand the instructions on the monograph, ask a doctor or pharmacist for help.
When to use it: Use 2 to 4 times daily or as directed by the doctor or pharmacist.
How long to use it: Continue using BETADINE Gargle & Mouthwash for as long as the doctor or pharmacist recommends.
If the patient forgets to use it: Use as soon as the patient remembers. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose missed and apply only the next regular scheduled dose as instructed.
If the patient used too much (overdose): Application to large areas of broken skin should be avoided as excessive absorption of iodine may occur.
Contact a doctor immediately or go to the Emergency Department of the nearest hospital, if the patient may have taken too much of this medicine. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning. The patient may need urgent medical attention.
When it must not be used: If the patient is allergic to iodine, Povidone or other ingredients in this product; If the patient has a thyroid problem; If the patient is about to receive or has received radioactive iodine treatments; If the patient is using products containing mercury such as thiomersal; In children under 1 year of age.
Before use: Tell the doctor or pharmacist if the patient: has other illnesses or health conditions; received radioactive iodine treatments within the last 4 weeks; use in children between 1 to 6 years of age; is using BETADINE Gargle & Mouthwash before any diagnostic test.
While using it: Things the patient must do: Use BETADINE Gargle & Mouthwash exactly as directed by the doctor or pharmacist. For oral use only. Spit out after use. Do not swallow. Rinsing after use is not necessary.
If redness, irritation, swelling or pain persists or increases or infection occurs, discontinue use and consult a doctor.
Tell all the doctors and pharmacists involved in treatment that the patient is using BETADINE Gargle & Mouthwash.
Tell the doctor immediately if the patient becomes pregnant while using this Gargle & Mouthwash.
Tell the doctor if symptoms do not improve or worsen, or the patient has an allergy or skin irritation such as redness, small blisters, itching, or a rash which may occur immediately.
Things the patient must not do: Avoid getting this medicine in the eyes.
Do not heat prior to application.
Things to be careful of: Use of this preparation may interfere with tests of thyroid function. If symptoms occur suggesting changes in thyroid function, these should be investigated.
If accidentally swallowed or comes in contact with the eyes, seek medical advice immediately.
In instances of local irritation or sensitivity, discontinue use.
BETADINE Gargle and Mouthwash do not affect the ability to drive or use machinery.
Do not use BETADINE Gargle & Mouthwash if the patient is pregnant, trying to get pregnant or thinks she may be pregnant.
Do not use BETADINE Gargle & Mouthwash if the patient is breast-feeding.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.
Like all medicines, BETADINE Gargle and Mouthwash can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The side effects such as cough, skin irritation, redness, swelling, small blisters, itching, or dry skin, tiredness, weakness, confusion, rapid shallow breathing, passing little or no urine, fluid retention and swelling of legs, ankles and feet.
Visit a doctor or pharmacist immediately if the patient experiences any side effects as listed as follows: Allergic reactions that occur quickly and include an itchy raised skin rash (hives), a body rash, sudden breathing problems, feeling faint, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat - seek medical help straight away; symptoms of a thyroid problem may include feeling nervous, moody, difficulty sleeping, hand tremors, fast or irregular heartbeat, trouble breathing, feeling very hot or sweaty, weight loss, weight gain and tiredness.
Patients may report any side effects or adverse drug reactions directly to the National Centre for Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring by visiting the website npra.gov.my [Consumers→Reporting Side Effects to Medicines (ConSERF) or Vaccines (AEFI)].
Taking other medicines: Absorption of iodine from povidone-iodine through either intact skin or broken skin may interfere with thyroid function tests.
Do not apply other medications to the same affected areas the patient treats with BETADINE Gargle & Mouthwash unless directed by the doctor.
Other antiseptics or medications can affect how BETADINE Gargle & Mouthwash works. Avoid preparations containing hydrogen peroxide, silver, taurolidine or octenidine.
Do not start a new treatment medication without telling the doctor or pharmacist.

Disposal: Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask a pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
