Sucralfate.
Indications/Uses
Short-term (≤8 weeks) treatment of duodenal ulcer, chronic gastritis, and stress ulcer.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adults: Gastric and duodenal ulcer, chronic gastritis: 2 g twice daily (morning and at bedtime) or 1 g 4 times daily, 1 hour before meals and at bedtime. Duration therapy: 4-6 weeks, or in resistance cases may be administered for up to 12 weeks. Max daily dose: 8 g.
Note: Duodenal ulcer, chronic gastritis: 2 teaspoons (10 mL) 4 times daily. Stress ulcer: 2 teaspoons (10 mL) twice daily.
Children: Not recommended for children <15 years old.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Patients with kidney disease and those who are undergoing dialysis. The administration of sucralfate and enteral nutrition should be done with a 1-hour interval. Sucralfate may interfere with the absorption of some medications, so other medications should be taken 2 hours before consuming sucralfate. Antacids may be given within ½ hour before or after sucralfate. Pregnancy, lactation.
Drug Interactions
Enteral nutrition. Cimetidine, ciprofloxacin, digoxin, ketoconazole, phenytoin, ranitidine, tetracycline, theophylline.
