There have been no reports of overdose with YAZ (drospirenone and ethinylestradiol). Overdosage may cause nausea and vomiting, and withdrawal bleeding may occur in females. Withdrawal bleeding may even occur in girls before their menarche if they have accidentally taken the medicinal product. There are no antidotes and further treatment should be symptomatic based on the knowledge of the pharmacological action of the constituents. Drospirenone is a spironolactone analogue which has antimineralocorticoid properties. Serum concentration of potassium and sodium and evidence of metabolic acidosis should be monitored in cases of overdose. Liver function tests should be conducted, particularly transaminase levels, 2 to 3 weeks after consumption.
