HIV infection in adults, & adolescents 12 to <18 yr previously treated w/ other HIV medicines which are no longer fully effective due to development of resistance or have caused side effects. Chronic HBV infection in adults.
Patients can still pass on HIV during treatment, although the risk is lowered by effective antiretroviral therapy. Treatment does not reduce the risk of passing on HBV to others through sexual contact or blood contamination. Do not give to adolescents w/ existing kidney problems. Adults w/ kidney problems may be advised to take Tenovid less frequently. Perform blood tests to assess kidney function before starting & during treatment. Risk of osteonecrosis, bone pain/fracture, & loss of bone mass. Patients w/ liver disease including chronic hepatitis B or C, who are treated w/ antiretrovirals, have a higher risk of severe & potentially fatal liver complications. Perform blood tests to monitor liver function in patients w/ history of liver disease or chronic hepatitis B infection. Opportunistic infections & autoimmune disorders may occur after treatment initiation for HIV infection. Caution in patients w/ intolerance to some sugars. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Perform regular blood tests & other diagnostic tests to monitor child's development if Tenovid has been taken during pregnancy. Mothers w/ HBV may be able to breastfeed their baby who has been given treatment to prevent hepatitis B transmission at birth. Mothers w/ HIV should not breastfeed. Not suitable for HIV-1-infected childn <12 yr; HBV-infected childn <12 yr. Has not been studied in elderly >65 yr.
Do not concomitantly use w/ other tenofovir disoproxil fumarate-containing medicines, tenofovir alafenamide, or adefovir dipivoxil. Caution if taking other medicines that may damage kidneys (eg, aminoglycosides, pentamidine, vancomycin, amphotericin B, foscarnet, ganciclovir, cidofovir, interleukin-2, adefovir dipivoxil, tacrolimus, NSAIDs); ledipasvir/sofosbuvir, sofosbuvir/velpatasvir or sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir. Raised blood levels of didanosine. Concomitant use w/ didanosine may reduce CD4 cell counts.
J05AF07 - tenofovir disoproxil ; Belongs to the class of nucleoside and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Used in the systemic treatment of viral infections.
