Fexofenadine HCl

Indications/Uses

Symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis eg, sneezing, rhinorrhea, oronasopharyngeal itching, watery & red eyes, & chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults & childn ≥6 yr.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult & childn ≥12 yr Normal renal function 60 mg bid or 180 mg once daily. Impaired renal function 60 mg once daily. Childn 6-11 yr Normal renal function 30 mg bid. Impaired renal function 30 mg once daily.

Overdosage

View Vifas overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Administration

Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take before meals. Do not take w/ fruit juice.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity.

Special Precautions

Discontinue at least 24-48 hr before skin testing procedure. Discontinue use if arrythmia occurs. Patients w/ CV risk. Not to be taken closely in time w/ Al & Mg antacids. Concomitant use w/ macrolides antibiotics eg, erythromycin, or imidazole antifungals eg, ketoconazole. Combination w/ pseudoephedrine. May affect ability to drive or operate dangerous machinery. Renal impairment. Not be used in 1st trimester of pregnancy. Avoid during lactation. Not to be used in childn <6 yr. Elderly ≥65 yr.

Adverse Reactions

Drowsiness, fatigue, headache, viral infection (eg, cold, flu), nausea, dry mouth, dizziness, agitation, URTI, back pain, coughing, fever, otitis media, sinusitis. Insomnia, anxiety, palpitation, sleep disorder, paroniria, rash, urticaria, pruritus, hypersensitivity reaction including angioedema, chest, dyspnea, flushing, anaphylaxis.

Drug Interactions

Increased plasma conc w/ ketoconazole, erythromycin. Decreased plasma conc w/ antacids containing Al & Mg. May reduce bioavailability w/ fruit juices (grapefruit, orange, apple). May interfere or decrease +ve result of skin reaction indicator.
