Each tablet contains Clomiphene citrate 50 mg.
OVINUM (Clomiphene citrate) is used as antiestrogen.
It stimulates the secretion of pituitary gonadotropic hormones probably by blocking the effect of estrogens at receptor sites in the hypothalamus and pituitary.
It is used in the treatment of anovulatory infertility in both sexes.
The usual female dose by mouth is one tablet daily for 5 days, starting on the 5th day of the menstrual cycle or at any time if there is amenorrhea. Male infertility should be given a half tablet once daily for at least three months or as physician recommendation.
To prevent inadvertent Clomiphene citrate administration during early pregnancy, the basal body temperature should be recorded throughout all treatment cycles. The therapy should be discontinued if pregnancy is suspected. Patients with liver disease or a history of liver dysfunction should not receive Clomiphene citrate therapy. Clomiphene citrate is contraindicated in patients with abnormal uterine bleeding.
Clomiphene citrate should not be given to patient with an ovarian cyst, as further ovarian enlargement may result. If enlargement of the ovary occurs, Clomiphene citrate therapy should be withheld until the ovaries have returned to the pretreatment size and the dosage or duration of the next course should be reduced. In case an abnormal uterine bleeding is present so full diagnostic measures are necessary.
Side effects tend to occur more frequently at higher doses and in the longer treatment courses. The more common side effects are vasomotor flushes, abdominal discomfort, abnormal uterine bleeding, ovarian enlargement, breast tenderness and visual symptoms. Clomiphene citrate has also some side effects such as nausea, vomiting, nervousness, insomnia, headache and dizziness.
