Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis & chronic treatment of asthma including prevention of day- & nighttime symptoms, aspirin-sensitive asthmatic patients & prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in adult & ped patients ≥6 mth. Relief of day- & nighttime symptoms of allergic rhinitis: seasonal allergic rhinitis in adult & ped patients ≥2 yr, & perennial allergic rhinitis in adult & ped patients ≥6 mth.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Take 1 dose in the evening. Asthma &/or allergic rhinitis Adult & adolescent ≥15 yr 10 mg once daily. Childn 6-14 yr 5 mg once daily. Moderate to severe asthma Take once daily concomitantly w/ inhaled corticosteroids to provide additional benefit. Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction Administer at least 2 hr before exercise.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not to be abruptly substituted for oral or inhaled corticosteroids. Not indicated in relief of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks including status asthmaticus. Neuropsychiatric events. Systemic eosinophilia sometimes presenting w/ clinical features of vasculitis consistent w/ Churg-Strauss syndrome. Reassess patients who develop eosinophilia, vasculitis rash, worsening pulmonary symptoms, cardiac complications &/or neuropathy. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Upper resp infection; increased bleeding tendency, thrombocytopenia; hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis, hepatic eosinophilic infiltration; hyperkinesia, agitation including aggressive behavior or hostility, anxiousness, depression, disorientation, disturbance in attention, dream abnormalities, dysphemia (stuttering), hallucinations, insomnia, memory impairment, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, psychomotor hyperactivity (including irritability, restlessness & tremor), somnambulism, suicidal thinking & behavior, tic; headache, dizziness, drowsiness, paresthesia/hypoesthesia, seizure; palpitations; asthma, epistaxis, eosinophilic granulomatosis w/ polyangiitis (Churg-Strauss syndrome), pulmonary eosinophilia; abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth; increased ALT & AST, hepatitis including cholestatic, hepatocellular, mixed-pattern liver injury; eczematous dermatitis, angioedema, bruising, erythema multiforme & nodosum, pruritus, rash, urticaria; arthralgia, myalgia including muscle cramps; enuresis in childn; thirst, asthenia/fatigue, edema, pyrexia.
