Indications/Uses
Infections caused by cefminox-susceptible strains of Strep sp. (excluding enterococci), E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus sp., H. influenzae & Bacteroides sp. eg, septicemia, tonsillitis, peritonsillar abscess, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, bronchiectasis w/ infection, secondary infection in chronic resp diseases, pneumonia, pulmonary suppuration, pyelonephritis, cystitis, cholecystitis, cholangitis, peritonitis, pelvic peritonitis, uterine adnexitis, intrauterine infections, pelvic dead space inflammation, parametritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Inj slowly or infuse drip over 1-2 hr. Adult 2 g daily in 2 divided doses. Septicemia, refractory or severe infections May increase dose up to 6 g daily in 3-4 divided doses. Childn 20 mg/kg tid-qid.
Contraindications
History or current hypersensitivity to cefminox or other cephems.
Special Precautions
Discontinue treatment if fever, rashes, blisters, skin peeling, stomatitis, pharyngitis, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, genital inflammation occur. History of hypersensitivity to penicillins. Penicillin-allergic patients. Personal or familial predisposition to allergic symptoms eg, bronchial asthma, exanthema or urticaria. May cause vascular pain & phlebitis w/ large IV dose. Possibility of developing Clostridium difficile & Klebsiella oxytoca. Patients who are poorly & parenterally nourished or in poor general condition. Observe patients immediately after administration; for vit K deficiency symptoms. Obtain past history of shock or any anaphylactic reaction or allergy to antibiotics. Avoid alcohol intake during & at least 1 wk after completion of treatment. False +ve in creatinine test using Yaffe's reaction; direct Coomb's reaction. Severe renal impairment. Pregnancy. Newborns & premature infants. Reduced physiological function in the elderly; bleeding tendency due to vit K deficiency.
Adverse Reactions
Hepatic dysfunction, increased GOT & GPT; eosinophilia, granulocytopenia; exanthema; diarrhea, nausea; fever; increased BUN. TEN, SJS.
Drug Interactions
Intensified renal toxicity w/ diuretics eg, furosemide. Disulfiram-like reaction w/ alcohol.
