Indications/Uses
Source of energy & essential fatty acids in pre- & post-op nutritional disturbances, nutritional disorders or disturbances of nitrogen balance due to inadequate or failing intestinal absorption, burns, prolonged unconsciousness eg, following cranial traumata or poisoning, impaired renal function, cachexia.
IV Adult Max: 3 g fat/kg daily. Infusion rate: 20 drops/min during the 1st 10 min. Continually increase & stabilize at 25-40 drops/min after 30 min to infuse 500 mL in 5-7 hr. Newborn & infant 0.5-4 g fat/kg/24 hr equiv to 2.5-20 mL/kg. Very low-birth-wt infant & small for gestational age infant Initially 0.5 g fat/kg/24 hr. Administer at constant rate over 24 hr by infusion pump.
Not to be mixed w/ other drugs, nutrient or electrolyte soln. Disturbance of fat metabolism in renal insufficiency, uncompensated diabetes, certain forms of liver insufficiency, metabolic disorders & sepsis. Check ability to eliminate fat daily in cases where daily infusions of IV fat are indicated for >1 wk. Monitor liver function in liver insufficiency.
