Indications/Uses

Active immunization in patients 2-49 yr for flu prevention caused by flu virus subtypes A & type B contained in the vaccine.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Intranasal Administer as 0.1 mL/nostril. Patient 9-49 yr 1 dose (0.2 mL). Childn 2-8 yr 1 or 2 doses (0.2 mL each, at least 1 mth apart).

Overdosage

View FluMist overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Contraindications

Previous severe allergic reaction to live attenuated flu virus including egg protein, or after previous dose of any flu vaccine. Childn & adolescents ≤17 yr receiving aspirin or aspirin-containing therapy due to Reye's syndrome w/ aspirin & wild-type flu infection.

Special Precautions

Not to be inj. Potential anaphylactic reactions following vaccination. Guillain-Barré syndrome w/in 6 wk of prior flu vaccination. Increased risk of wheezing in persons w/ asthma. Persons w/ severe asthma or active wheezing. Immunocompromised persons. Individuals w/ underlying medical conditions predisposing to complications following wild-type flu infection. Increased risk of hospitalization & wheezing in childn <2 yr. Not approved for use in childn <24 mth & elderly ≥65 yr.

Adverse Reactions

Patient 2-49 yr: Runny nose or nasal congestion. Adults 18-49 yr: Headache, sore throat, tiredness/weakness, muscle aches, cough, chills. Childn 2-6 yr: Fever (>37.78°C). Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; hypersensitivity reactions (including anaphylactic reaction, facial edema, & urticaria); Guillain-Barré syndrome, Bell's palsy, meningitis; rash.

Drug Interactions

Concomitant use w/ aspirin or aspirin-containing therapy in childn & adolescents ≤17 yr. Reduced effectiveness w/ antivirals that are active against flu viruses A &/or B if administered w/in 48 hr before or w/in 2 wk after vaccination.
