Lactulose
Indications/Uses
Regulation of physiological rhythm of the colon in constipation. Conditions where soft stool is considered of medical benefit eg, haemorrhoids, post colonic/anal surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Taken as single or 2 divided doses daily. Adult & adolescent Starting dose: 15-45 mL daily. Maintenance dose: 15-30 mL daily. Childn 7-14 yr 15 mL daily. Maintenance dose: 10-15 mL daily; 1-6 yr 5-10 mL daily. Maintenance dose: 5-10 mL daily. Infant <1 yr Starting & maintenance dose: Up to 5 mL daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow immediately, do not keep in mouth for extended period of time. For single daily dose, take at the same time eg, during breakfast. May be administered diluted or undiluted.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Galactosaemia. GI obstruction, digestive perforation or risk of digestive perforation.
Special Precautions
Not to be taken if patient has abdominal pain or nausea, vomiting. Painful abdominal symptoms of undetermined cause before treatment; insufficient therapeutic effect after several days. Diarrhea & electrolyte balance disturbance w/ chronic use of unadjusted doses & misuse. Drink sufficient amounts of fluids (1.5-2 L equiv to 6-8 glasses) during the day while on therapy. Not to be taken by patients w/ galactose or fructose intolerance, total lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Contains propylene glycol; may induce serious adverse effects in neonates when co-administered w/ any substrate for alcohol dehydrogenase eg, ethanol. May disturb defecation reflex in childn.

Diarrhea. Flatulence, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting.
