Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of vit D insufficiency & deficiency in adults. Adjunct to specific therapy for osteoporosis, reduce risk of fracture incidence in elderly.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ hypercalcemia or metastatic calcification.
Special Precautions
Not to be used more than the recommended dose or consecutively for a long time. Pregnancy. Not to be administered w/ large doses of vit D analogs to nursing women. Infants may have aortic valvular stenosis, retinopathy, & mental &/or physical retardation in case of pregnancy w/ prolonged hypercalcemia.
Adverse Reactions
Weakness; headache; somnolence; nausea; vomiting, dry mouth; constipation; muscle & bone pain; metallic taste; pruritus.
Drug Interactions
Hypermagnesemia in patients on chronic renal dialysis w/ antacids. Hypercalcemia & cardiac arrhythmia w/ digitalis glycosides. Atrial fibrillation w/ verapamil when supplemental Ca & calciferol have induced hypercalcemia. Reduced intestinal absorption w/ cholestyramine. Reduced absorption w/ mineral oil w/ prolonged use. Inhibited synthetic & decay w/ ketoconazole. Inhibited endogenous synthesis w/ phenytoin, phenobarb. May have hypercalcemia in hypoparathyroid patients w/ thiazide diuretics.
