Povidone iodine
Indications/Uses
Pharyngitis, tonsillitis, stomatitis, gum inflammation. Disinfection of oral cavity to prevent bad breath. Prevention of oral wound infections including after tooth extraction & oral cavity surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Dilute 1-2 mL w/ about 30 mL water on use, & gargle for 30 sec several times a day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Thyroid dysfunction; Duhring's dermatitis herpetiformis. Before, during & after radioiodine administration. Concomitant use w/ products containing Hg. Childn <1 yr.
Special Precautions
Oropharyngeal use in intubated patients may cause pneumonitis. Thyroid function disorders including congenital hypothyroidism in offspring of mothers who have received treatment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Drug Interactions
Impaired effectiveness w/ protein & other unsaturated organic compd. Weakening effects w/ wound treatment prep containing enzymatic components. Reduced effects w/ products containing Hg, silver, hydrogen peroxide, & taurolidine. May cause transient dark discolourations at application site when used before or after octenidine. False +ve lab results (eg, tests w/ toluidine or gum guaiac for Hb or glucose determination in stool or urine). Interference w/ various investigations (thyroid scintigraphy, determination of protein-bound iodine, radioiodine diagnostics).
