Indications/Uses
Severe malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in adults & childn.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV/IM Administer for min of 24 hr (3 doses) regardless of patient's ability to tolerate oral medication earlier. Adult & childn weighing ≥20 kg 2.4 mg/kg at 0, 12, & 24 hr, then once daily until oral treatment can be substituted. Childn weighing <20 kg 3 mg/kg at 0, 12, & 24 hr, then once daily until oral treatment can be substituted.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to artesunate or other artemisinins.
Special Precautions
Not for treatment of severe malaria due to Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae or Plasmodium ovale. Resistance to antimalarials. Post-treatment haemolytic anaemia in childn in malaria endemic areas & non-immune travellers w/ severe falciparum malaria. Patients w/ hyperparasitaemia. Hepatic &/or renal impairment. 1st trimester of pregnancy. Lactation. Infants weighing <5 kg. Young childn. Adults weighing >100 kg.
Adverse Reactions
Post-treatment haemolytic anaemia in travellers, mild & transient decrease in reticulocyte count. Post-treatment haemolytic anaemia in endemic areas. Dizziness, light-headedness, headache, insomnia, tinnitus (w/ or w/o decrease in auditory function); cough &/or nasal symptoms; altered taste, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or cramps, diarrhoea; rash, alopecia; arthralgia, muscle disorders; fatigue, malaise, fever, inj site pain.
