Dosage/Direction for Use
Parkinsonism Initially 1 mg the 1st day, 2 mg the 2nd day, then increase by 2 mg daily up to 6-10 mg/day (depending on the optimal level). To be given tid-qid. Drug-induced parkinsonism 5-15 mg daily. Advisable to initiate therapy w/ single 1 mg dose. Elderly (>65 yr) Smaller dose required.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Best taken w/ meals. Take before meals if dry mouth occurs or after meals if drooling/nausea occurs. Take at the same time each day.
Contraindications
Closed-angle glaucoma, paralytic ileus, prostatic hypertrophy.
Special Precautions
Tachycardia, thyrotoxicosis, MI, hyperpyrexia, renal & hepatic disease. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Gl disturbances; glaucoma, mydriasis, urinary retention, mental disturbances, excitement.
Drug Interactions
Imipramine, desipramine, other anticholinergic-like drugs.
