Inactivated trivalent flu vaccine (split virion)
Indications/Uses
Active immunisation of adults, including pregnant women & childn from ≥6 mth for prevention of flu caused by 2 influenza A virus subtypes & influenza B virus type.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/SC Adult & childn 6 mth-17 yr 1 dose of 0.5 mL. Childn <9 yr who have not been previously vaccinated 2nd dose of 0.5 mL given after at least 4 wk interval.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to inactivated trivalent flu vaccine or to any component that may be present as traces eg, eggs (ovalbumin, chicken proteins), neomycin, formaldehyde & octoxinol-9.
Special Precautions
Appropriate medical treatment & supervision should always be readily available in case of anaphylactic reaction following vaccine administration. Postpone vaccination in case of moderate or severe febrile or acute disease. Not to be administered intravascularly. Patients w/ thrombocytopenia or bleeding disorder; bleeding may occur following IM administration. Syncope may occur following or before any vaccination; put procedures in place to prevent injury from fainting & manage syncopal reactions. May not protect all vaccinees. Possible insufficient Ab response in patients w/ endogenous or iatrogenic immunosuppression. Contains <1 mmol/dose K & Na. Not all infants <6 mth born to vaccinated women during pregnancy will be protected.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; myalgia; inj site pain, malaise. Fever, shivering, inj site erythema, induration & swelling. Childn 3-17 yr & 6-35 mth: Inj site ecchymosis. Childn 6-35 mth: Decreased appetite; abnormal crying, irritability; drowsiness; vomiting. Diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
Not to be given at the same time as other vaccines; use separate inj site & syringes. Immunological response may be reduced w/ immunosuppressant treatment.
