Cetirizine HCl
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief of allergic conditions including rhinitis & chronic urticaria. Seasonal rhinitis (recommended to be given at the beginning of hay fever season when pollens are still few).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult & childn ≥6 yr 10 mg daily or 5 mg bid. Hepatic & renal impairment Reduce to ½ the usual daily dose. Syr 2-5 yr Initially 2.5 mL once daily. May be increased to max 5 mL daily (given as 5 mL once daily or 2.5 mL every 12 hr), 6 mth-2 yr 2.5 mL once daily. May be increased to max 5 mL daily (given as 2.5 mL every 12 hr).
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or piperazine derivatives. Not recommended to hypokalemic patients w/ chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis. Childn <6 yr w/ hepatic & renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Discontinue treatment if signs & symptoms eg, formation of small pustules occur w/ or w/o pyrexia or erythema. Caution in concomitant use w/ alcohol. Caution in patients requiring mental alertness or physical coordination eg, drivers or machine operators. No data is available on safety in pregnant women. Not recommended in lactating mothers. Not to be given in infants & childn (may increase risk of antimuscarinic effects). Caution & reduce dose in elderly who most likely have impaired renal & hepatic function.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness. Recurrent acute hepatitis (when used for control of seasonal allergic rhinitis). Irritability, insomnia, somnolence, fatigue, dry mouth, pharyngitis, dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, cough, diarrhea, epistaxis, bronchospasm, nausea & vomiting, hypersensitivity manifested by urticarial & fixed drug eruptions, nervousness, rashes, anaphylactic shock, aggression, hallucination, dysgeusia, dyskinesia, dystonia, memory impairment, syncope, tremor, eye pain/swelling, blurred vision, abnormal hepatic function, pruritus, urticaria, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, arthralgia, enuresis, urinary retention, erectile dysfunction, malaise, abnormal feeling, pruritus upon w/drawal, increased wt. Autoimmune-mediated hepatotoxicity (possible to develop). Life-threatening hepatitis w/ long-term treatment.
Drug Interactions
Sedation may be enhanced w/ CNS depressants eg, barbiturates, alcohol, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, anxiolytics, sedatives & neuroleptics. Enhanced effects of alcohol & other CNS depressants.
