Treatment of a wide scope of infections including anthrax; infected bites & stings, biliary tract, bone & joint infections, brucellosis, cat scratch disease, chancroid, exacerbations of cystic fibrosis, gastroenteritis including traveler's diarrhea & campylobacter enteritis, salmonella enteritis, cholera & shigellosis, gonorrhea, neutropenia in immunocompromised patients w/ infections, Legionnaire's disease, otitis media & externa, peritonitis, Q-fever, lower resp tract infections including pseudomonas infections in cystic fibrosis except infections caused by Strep pneumoniae (eg, pneumococcal pneumonia), septicemia, skin & soft tissue infections, spotted fevers, typhoid & paratyphoid fever, typhus & UTI, TB, opportunistic mycobacterial infections. Prophylaxis of meningococcal meningitis & surgery.

Adult >18 yr 500 mg bid 12 hrly. Uncomplicated acute gonorrhea 250 mg as single dose. Meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis 500 mg as single dose. Childn & adolescent Inhalation of anthrax 15 mg/kg bid. Max: 500 mg bid for 60 days. Renal impairment CrCl <20 mL/min 250 mg as single dose.

May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimise GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.

Epileptic patients, history of CNS disorders, myasthenia gravis & G6PD deficiency. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents.

Increased risk of crystalluria in patients w/ alkaline urine. False +ve reaction for urinary glucose (pseudoglycosuria). Severe renal & hepatic impairment. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Elderly.

GI disturbances eg, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia; CNS effects eg, headache, anorexia, flatulence, bilirubinemia, dizziness & restlessness; tremor, drowsiness, insomnia, agitation, confusion, unpleasant dreams, visual & other sensory disturbances, hallucinations, depression, convulsions, eosinophilic meningitis, acute psychoses, peripheral neuropathy, dysaesthesia, catatonia, hemiparesis, tinnitus. Rash, pruritus, photosensitivity, vasculitis, erythema multiforme, SJS, TEN, laryngeal edema & anaphylaxis. Transient elevation of serum creatinine, BUN & liver enzyme values, acute renal failure secondary to interstitial nephritis, crystalluria, jaundice, moniliasis, asthenia, hepatitis, eosinophilia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia, hemolytic anemia or agranulocytosis, myalgia & gynecomastia; tachycardia, edema, syncope, hot flushes & sweating; pseudomembranous colitis & superinfection w/ Candida, Clostridium difficile & Strep pneumoniae.

May interfere w/ clearance of hepatic-metabolized drugs eg, theophylline & caffeine. Reduced absorption w/ Mg, Al or Fe & Zn salt containing antacids, sucralfate, dairy products w/ high Ca content. Adverse neurological effect w/ naproxen & chloroquine. Reduced peak serum conc w/ opioid analgesics. Enhanced nephrotoxicity w/ cyclosporine. Increased plasma conc of midazolam. Increased plasma conc w/ probenecid.

J01MA02 - ciprofloxacin ; Belongs to the class of fluoroquinolones. Used in the systemic treatment of infections.
