Betahistine HCl
Indications/Uses
Meniere's syndrome, symptoms of which may include vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss & nausea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 8-16 mg tid. Maintenance dose range: 24-48 mg daily. Daily dose should not exceed 48 mg.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ pheochromocytoma.
Special Precautions
Caution in patients w/ history of peptic ulcer. Clinical intolerance has been shown in bronchial asthma patients; carefully monitor patients during therapy. Avoid use during pregnancy. Weigh importance of taking the medicine by the mother against the benefits of breastfeeding & potential risk for the child. Not recommended in childn & adolescents age <18.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, occasional drowsiness; dyspepsia (mild gastric complaints eg, vomiting, GI pain, abdominal distension & bloating), nausea.
Drug Interactions
Inhibition of metabolism by drugs that inhibit MAO including MAO subtype B (eg, selegiline). Interaction of betahistine w/ antihistamines may in theory affect the efficacy of one of these drugs.
