Nutritional supplement in the management of hypocalcemia & Ca deficiency states resulting from dietary deficiency or aging. Helps protect pregnant & lactating mothers against Ca depletion. Promotes healthy teeth & strong bones to prevent osteoporosis. Helps achieve max height by facilitating bone accretion during adolescence.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult & childn ≥7 yr One-two 325 mg tab bid or one 650 mg tab once daily or bid. Pregnant & lactating women Two 325 mg tab tid or one 650 mg tab tid.

Overdosage

Administration

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Severe hypercalcemia & hypercalciuria, hypervitaminosis D, hyperparathyroidism, severe kidney failure, osteoporosis due to immobility & decalcifying tumors. Ventricular fibrillation. Patients on cardiac glycosides.

Special Precautions

May precipitate arrhythmia. Potential constipation. Increased incidence of prostate cancer. Patients w/ kidney impairment, cardiac disease associated w/ hypercalcemia (eg, sarcoidosis) & some malignancies. Avoid in patients w/ Ca-containing kidney stones or history of renal calculi. Milk-alkali syndrome in doses >4 g daily. Increased incidence of prostate cancer. Monitor blood levels & urinary Ca excretion.

Adverse Reactions

GI irritation, constipation, bloating, flatulence, nausea, & headache. Hypercalcemia in patients w/ chronic kidney failure (w/ large doses).

Drug Interactions

Enhanced effects of digitalis glycosides on the heart & may precipitate digitalis intoxication. Hypercalcemia w/ thiazide diuretics or vit D. May predispose to milk-alkali syndrome w/ thiazide diuretics. Reduced absorption of bisphosphonates (eg, alendronate), fluoride, some fluoroquinolones & tetracyclines, levothyroxine, phenytoin, & minerals (eg, Fe & Zn). Decreased effectiveness of aspirin, bismuth subcitrate, Ca channel blocker, & cefpodoxime. Decreased bioavailability of atenolol. Reduced absorption w/ alcohol, Al-containing antacids, mineral oil, stimulant laxatives (prolonged use), & corticosteroids. May reduce serum levels w/ anticonvulsants.
