Infections due to sensitive gm +ve & gm -ve bacteria; surgical prophylaxis; more active against H. influenzae & N. gonorrhea; Lyme disease.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis 250-500 mg bid for 5-7 days. Acute bronchitis 250-500 mg bid for 5-7 days. Uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis or cervicitis 1 g as single dose. Other infections 250 mg bid for 7-10 days.

Special Precautions

Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms. Concurrent use w/ potent diuretics. History of colitis. Monitor prothrombin time. Mild to life-threatening pseudomembranous colitis. Pregnancy.

Adverse Reactions

Anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritus, serum sickness-like reaction, urticaria; pseudomembranous colitis; hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia & increased prothrombin time. Hepatic impairment including hepatitis & cholestatic jaundice. Seizure. Erythema multiforme, SJS & TEN. Renal dysfunction. Toxic nephropathy, hepatic cholestasis, aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia, hemorrhage, increased BUN, increased CrCl, false +ve test for urinary glucose, increased alkaline phosphatase, neutropenia, elevated bilirubin & agranulocytosis.

Increase area under the serum conc w/ probenecid. Lower bioavailability w/ drugs that reduced gastric acidity.
