The Copper T Model TCu is the most widely available and commonly used type of IUD. It is a long-term, reversible, and effective family planning method.
Medical Eligibility for IUD Use: Most women can use IUDs safely and effectively who: are unmarried; are at any point in their reproductive period (young or old); have or have not had children; do hard manual labor; are breastfeeding; have just had a spontaneous or induced abortion or miscarriage (if no evidence of infection or at risk of infection); have had ectopic pregnancy; have had pelvic surgery; have had pelvic inflammatory disease; have vaginitis or STIs other than purulent cervicitis, chlamydia, or gonorrhea; are HIV-positive or taking antiretroviral medications.
IUDs are not recommended for insertion - unless other methods are not available or acceptable if a woman has: AIDS, but no antiretroviral therapy or access to care; a high individual risk of chlamydia and gonococcal infection (partner has current purulent discharge or STI).
IUDs should not be used if a woman: is pregnant (known or suspected pregnancy); has unexplained vaginal bleeding; has current PID, gonorrhea, or chlamydia; has acute purulent (pus-like) discharge; has distorted uterine cavity; has malignant trophoblast disease; has known pelvic tuberculosis; has genital tract cancer.
