Beractant (equiv to phospholipids 25 mg/mL, triglycerides 0.5-1.75 mg/mL, free fatty acids 1.4-3.5 mg/mL, proteins <1 mg/mL)

Indications/Uses

Prevention & treatment ("rescue") of resp distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants.

Dosage/Direction for Use

4 mL/kg birth wt via endotracheal tube. 4 doses can be administered in the 1st 48 hr of life. Doses should be given no more frequently every 6 hr. Prevention Premature infant <1,250 g birth wt or w/ evidence of surfactant deficiency Give as soon as possible, preferably w/in 15 min of birth. Rescue Infant w/ RDS confirmed by x-ray & requiring mechanical ventilation Give as soon as possible, preferably by 8 hr of age.

Special Precautions

For intratracheal use only. Frequently monitor systemic O₂ & CO₂ w/ arterial or transcutaneous measurement. Transient episodes of bradycardia & decreased O₂ saturation; discontinue dosing procedure & initiate appropriate measures to alleviate the condition, resume once stabilized. Rales & moist breath sounds can occur transiently after administration. Increased risk of post-treatment nosocomial sepsis. Infants <600 g birthwt.
