Flurbiprofen
Indications/Uses
Short-term relief of symptoms of sore throats eg, throat soreness, pain, difficulty swallowing & swelling.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥12 yr 1 dose (3 sprays) to the back of the throat every 3-6 hr. Max: Not to exceed 5 doses (15 sprays) in 24 hr. Not to be used for >3 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to flurbiprofen, ibuprofen, ASA or other NSAIDs. Active or history of recurrent peptic ulcer/haemorrhage (≥2 distinct episodes of proven ulceration or bleeding). History of GI bleeding or perforation, severe colitis, haemorrhagic or haematopoietic disorders related to previous NSAID therapy. Severe heart, hepatic or renal failure. Pregnancy (last trimester). Childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use at 1st appearance of skin rash, mucosal lesions or any other sign of hypersensitivity; if mouth irritation, & GI bleeding or ulceration occurs. Not to be inhaled while spraying. For oromucosal & short-term use only. May have increased risk of aseptic meningitis in patients w/ SLE & mixed connective tissue disease. Nephrotoxicity. Analgesic-induced headache may occur in prolonged use or use beyond product posology. GI bleeding, ulceration & perforation. Isolated cases of exacerbation of infective inflammations eg, development of necrotizing fasciitis. Patients suffering from or w/ previous history of bronchial asthma or allergic disease; renal & cardiac impairment, liver dysfunction, those taking diuretics & the elderly; history of HTN &/or heart failure; history of GI disease eg, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease. Avoid concomitant use w/ other NSAIDs including COX-2 selective inhibitors. Concomitant use w/ medications which could increase risk of ulceration or bleeding eg, oral corticosteroids, anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), SSRIs, or antiplatelet agents (eg, ASA). Limited evidence on impairment of female fertility. Avoid use during 1st & 2nd trimesters of pregnancy. Increased frequency of adverse reactions especially GI bleeding & perforation in the elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache; throat irritation; mouth ulcers, pain, or numbness in the mouth; oropharyngeal pain; discomfort in the mouth; nausea & diarrhoea; itching sensation in skin.
Drug Interactions
Risk of adverse reactions may be increased w/ low-dose ASA; other NSAIDs including ibuprofen & COX-2 selective inhibitors; alcohol. May enhance effects of anticoagulants eg, warfarin. Increased risk of GI bleeding w/ antiplatelet agents & SSRIs; corticosteroids. May reduce effect of diuretics & other antihypertensives eg, ACE inhibitors & AIIA. May exacerbate cardiac failure, reduce GFR & increase plasma glycoside levels w/ cardiac glycosides. Increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ ciclosporin. Potential increases in plasma levels of lithium; MTX. Reduced effect of mifepristone. Increased risk of convulsions associated w/ quinolones. Possible increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ tacrolimus. Increased risk of haematological toxicity w/ zidovudine.
