Clobetasol propionate
Indications/Uses
Corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses including psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis), recalcitrant dermatoses, lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus & other skin conditions which do not respond satisfactorily to less potent steroids.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply to affected area bid for not >4 wk. Max wkly dose: Should not exceed 50 g.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to clobetasol propionate. Long-term treatment of ulcerative conditions, rosacea, pruritus; presence of acute infections.
Special Precautions
Avoid direct contact w/ eyes. Topical steroid addiction or red skin syndrome due to misuse, abuse & abrupt stop. Excessive use may cause atrophy, rosacea, acne, perioral dermatitis & symptoms including redness of the skin, burning sensation followed by skin peeling. Accidental ingestion may lead to nausea & epigastric pain. Pregnancy category C. Do not apply to the breast if used during lactation to avoid accidental ingestion by the infant.
Adverse Reactions
Adrenal suppression, Cushingoid's syndrome, diabetes & HTN (in prolonged usage of large amount.
Drug Interactions
Inhibited metabolism w/ CYP3A4 (eg, ritonavir & itraconazole).
