Dosage/Direction for Use
Treatment & prevention of recurrence depression Adult Initially 50 mg once daily, increased in increments of 50 mg at interval of at least a wk if necessary. Max: 200 mg daily.

Special Precautions
Increased risk of suicidal thinking & behavior (suicidality) in childn & adolescent w/ major depressive disorder & other psychiatric disorders. Avoid administration in patients taking electroconvulsive therapy; w/ unstable epilepsy. Carefully monitor patients w/ controlled epilepsy & discontinue treatment if patient develops seizure. Avoid concomitant use w/ MAOIs; at least 14 days should elapse between discontinuation of MAOIs & initiation of sertraline. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Caution & use reduced doses in patients w/ impaired hepatic or renal function; should not be used in severe hepatic or renal failure. No adequate & well-controlled studies in pregnant women; should be used during pregnancy if clearly needed. Caution is given to lactating mother.

Adverse Reactions
Dry mouth, GI disturbances (eg, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, constipation & diarrhea); anorexia & wt loss; anxiety, restlessness, nervousness & insomnia or drowsiness & fatigue; headache, tremor, dizziness, convulsions, extrapyramidal effects & sexual dysfunction.

Drug Interactions
Not recommended w/ alcohol. Caution if administered w/ other centrally acting medications. Higher incidence of 5-HT associated adverse effects w/ lithium & tryptophan. May cause a shift of plasma conc potentially resulting in an adverse effect in concomitant use w/ another drug which is highly bound. Adverse effects may result from displacement of protein bound sertraline by another bound drug.
