Indications/Uses
Treatment & control of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in patients w/ enlarged prostate to: cause regression of enlarged prostate, improve urinary flow & symptoms associated w/ BPH; reduce incidence of acute urinary retention & need for surgery including transurethral resection of prostate & prostatectomy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 5 mg tab daily. Treatment for at least 6 mth may be necessary to assess whether beneficial response has been achieved. Treatment should be continued long-term thereafter.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Women who are or may potentially be pregnant. Childn.
Special Precautions
Use w/ caution in men w/ hepatic impairment & at risk of obstructive uropathy. Evaluate patients for prostatic carcinoma before & during therapy. Decreases serum markers conc of prostate cancer (eg, PSA) by up to 50% even when cancer is present; reference values should be adjusted accordingly. Women who are or may potentially be pregnant should not handle crushed/broken finasteride tab. Not indicated during lactation. Use of condom is recommended if patient's sexual partner is or may become pregnant.
Adverse Reactions
Decreased libido, impotence, ejaculation disorders, reduced ejaculate vol. Breast tenderness & enlargement, hypersensitivity reactions (eg, swelling of lips & face, pruritus, urticaria, rashes); testicular pain.
