Betahistine diHCl
Indications/Uses
16 mg: Meniere's syndrome or vestibular vertigo. 24 mg: Reduce symptoms of vertigo, tinnitus, & hearing loss associated w/ Meniere's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 8-16 mg tid preferably w/ meals. 24-mg tab Maintenance dose: 24-48 mg daily. Max dose: 48 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ active peptic ulcer; pheochromocytoma. 24 mg: Patients w/ history of peptic ulcer. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
Caution in patients w/ peptic ulcer or history of peptic ulceration; either urticaria, rashes or allergic rhinitis; severe hypotension. Monitor patients w/ bronchial asthma during treatment. Should not be used during pregnancy & lactation. 24 mg: Avoid concomitant use w/ antihistamines. Not recommended for ped use.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Antagonism could be expected w/ antihistamines. 16 mg: Reports of interaction w/ ethanol & compd containing pyrimethamine w/ dapsone; potentiation w/ salbutamol. Inhibition of metabolism by drugs that inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) including MAO subtype B (eg, selegiline). Caution in concomitant use w/ MAOIs (including MAO-B selective). May cause mutual attenuation of effect w/ H1 antagonists.
