Indications/Uses
Schizophrenia including the 1st psychotic episode, acute schizophrenic episodes, chronic schizophrenia & other psychotic conditions where +ve &/or -ve symptoms are intense. Alleviates emotional disorders that relate to schizophrenia. Behavioral disorders in patients w/ dementia whose symptoms are intense. Additional treatment in mood stabilizers for manic episodes accompanied by bipolar disorders. Developmental & other disorders of disruptive behavior in patients w/ mental function that is rated under the average or mental retirement, whose destructive behavior is intense.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 2 mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses, may be increased to 4 mg daily on the 2nd day & subsequently adjusted in increments/decrements of 1 or 2 mg daily at intervals of not less than 1 wk. Max: 16 mg daily. Elderly & patient w/ renal or hepatic impairment Initially 0.5 mg bid slowly increased in steps of 0.5 mg bid if necessary to 1-2 mg bid.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
May cause involuntary facial movements in long-term use. May increase body wt. Patients w/ CV diseases, disturbed renal or hepatic function, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy. Avoid during pregnancy. Not recommended during lactation. Childn <15 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Somnolence, stimulation, anxiety & headache. Involuntary movements of the tongue, face or jaws may be noted during long treatment. Breast increase, galactorrhea or menstrual disorder may present in some people after long treatment.
Drug Interactions
May increase actions of alcohol & of medicines that reduce the ability to react ie, tranquilizers, narcotic analgesics, several antihistamines, antidepressants & antihypertensives. May antagonize action w/ drugs for Parkinson's disease (dopamine agonists ie, levodopa). May affect effectiveness w/ drugs used mainly in epilepsy or trigeminal neuralgia (strong facial pain).
