Cefuroxime Na

Indications/Uses

Prophylaxis against infection to abdominal, pelvic, orthopedic, cardiac, pulmonary, esophageal & vascular surgery. Resp tract, ENT, soft tissue, bone & joint, obstet & gynecologic infections; UTI; pelvic inflammatory disease; gonorrhea; septicemia, meningitis.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult 750 mg IM/IV 8 hrly, may be increased to 1.5 g IV 8 hrly. Max: 3-6 g daily. Childn & infant 30-100 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses. Most infections 60 mg/kg/day. Neonate 30-100 mg/kg/day in 2-3 divided doses. Abdominal, pelvic & orthopedic surgeries 1.5 g IV w/ induction of anesth, may be supplemented w/ 2 x 750 mg IM doses 8 & 16 hr later. Cardiac, pulmonary, esophageal & vascular surgeries 1.5 g IV w/ induction of anesth, continuing w/ 750 mg IM 8 hrly for a further 24-48 hr. Total joint replacement 1.5 g mixed dry w/ each pack of methylmethacrylate cement monomer before adding the liqd monomer. Gonorrhea 1.5 g as single dose, given as 2 x 750 mg IM into different sites. Moderate renal impairment (GFR 20-50 mL/min) 750 mg every 8 hr. Marked renal impairment (GFR 20-50 mL/min) 750 mg every 12 hr. Severe renal impairment (GFR <10 mL/min) 750 mg once daily. Patients on dialysis 750 mg at the end of each dialysis.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

Special Precautions

Anaphylactic reaction to penicillins; concurrent treatment w/ potent diuretics eg, furosemide. Slight interference w/ copper reduction methods (Benedict's, Fehling's, Clinitest). False -ve reactions in ferricyadine test. Falsely high reading in the alkaline picrate assay for creatinine. Overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms. Pregnancy.

Adverse Reactions

Rashes, GI disturbances, candida intertrigo; decreased Hb conc & eosinophilia; +ve Coombs' test; transient increase in serum liver enzymes & bilirubin; pain.
