Ascorbic acid 500 mg, Zn 10 mg
Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of vit C & Zn deficiencies.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ hyperoxaluria or G6PD deficiency; on Na restricted diet. Vit C: Babies of women who take high doses during pregnancy may develop rebound scurvy.
Adverse Reactions
Vit C: >2,000 mg/day: Stomach upset & diarrhea. Daily use of high doses: Formation of oxalate stones in the kidneys; disturbed water & electrolyte balance in the body, increased hemolysis, increased Ca in the kidneys & suppression of cobalamine (vit B12) activity. Patient w/ G6PD deficiency: Hemolysis (in large doses). Zn: GI side effects eg, nausea & vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Vit C: Concurrent intake of ascorbic acid >200 mg per elemental Fe 300 mg would increase intestinal absorption of Fe. Increased urinary excretion of ascorbic acid & decreased excretion of aspirin occur when taken together. Prolonged presence of paracetamol in the blood. Not compatible in soln w/ aminophylline, bleomycin, erythromycin, lactobionate, nafcillin, Na nitrofurantoin, conjugated estrogens, Na bicarbonate, sulfafurazole, diethanolamine, chloramphenicol Na succinate, chlorothiazide Na & hydrocortisone Na succinate. Reports of interference w/ blood-thinning treatments. Zn: Interactions w/ cephalosporins, β-lactam antibiotics, tetracyclines, antiretroviral drugs (eg, atazanavir, ritonavir), antineoplastic agents (eg, cisplatin), antidiabetic drugs (eg, glimepiride, glyburide, pioglitazone, insulin) & K-sparing diuretics (eg, amiloride). Concomitant use w/ food, alcohol, or tobacco.
