Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, 23-valent

Indications/Uses

Prevention of pneumococcal diseases caused by 23 serotypes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6B, 7F, 8, 9N, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 17F, 18C, 19F, 19A, 20, 22F, 23F, & 33F) in individuals aged ≥2 yr.

Dosage/Direction for Use

SC/IM Single dose (0.5 mL) in deltoid muscle of lateral upper arm or lateral mid-thigh. Revaccination Patient at high risk (splenectomy) or w/ significant decreasing Ab titers (eg, nephrotic syndrome, renal failure & organ transplantation) Revaccinate those who were previously vaccinated >5 yr. Childn <10 yr w/ nephrotic syndrome, splenectomy or sickle cell diseases Revaccinate 3-5 yr later after initial vaccination.

Overdosage

View Pneumops 23 overdosage for action to be taken in the event of an overdose.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity or individuals w/ allergic reactions to any component of vaccine. Individuals w/ encephalopathy, uncontrolled epilepsy, or other progressive diseases of nervous system; w/ fever, acute infection, or chronic diseases at acute stage. Not recommended for revaccination w/in 3 yr.

Special Precautions

Intravascular & intradermal inj is prohibited. Do not administer intracutaneously or IV, & ensure syringe needle is not puncturing blood vessels during inoculation. Nursing women or individuals w/ family or individual history of convulsion, history of epilepsy & allergic diathesis. Appropriate monitoring, medical care & rescue measures should be readily available in case of rare hypersensitivity reactions during vaccination. Observe recipient for at least 30 min on site following inj. Not recommended during pregnancy. Lactation. Do not administer vaccine to childn <2 yr.
